PRODUCT PASSPORT

DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT

To ensure greater transparency along the supply chain and simplify circularity, we have worked with industry partners to introduce the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and developed a comprehensive data protocol fit for the purpose. The DPP is integrated into the first test fleet fitted out with our circular tarps.

Digital product passports are data records with product and material-related information that are attached to products and can be accessed online. Among other things, they serve to ensure transparency, traceability and product safety, but also enable sustainable decision-making and greater efficiency. Digital product passports will one day be mandatory for all products manufactured in or imported into the EU, including truck tarps. The globally valid GS1 Standards play a decisive role here.

Thanks to the data protocol that FREITAG has developed with industry partners, «our» DPP contains all the essential information about the truck tarp to which it is attached. On the one hand, it provides greater transparency in areas such as material composition, production, and origin. On the other hand, the aim is to simplify processes along the value chain thanks to information about the manufacturer and tarp specialist, the tarp’s age, and the recycling stream into which the material will one day be fed. This is important not only for trucking companies but also for us because, at the end of the day, we want to create unique, sought-after bags from the tarp.

The Digital Product Passport will be attached to the inside of the tarps in the form of prints, with an RFID chip supplied by SKP GmbH, while a QR code will make it possible to obtain online information about the tarp. The test fleet with circular tarps is already equipped with this system.

HOW IT WORKS

The tarp’s serial number (product ID) can be seen on the RFID chip or on the DPP label with its QR code on the inside of the tarp. The detailed product IDs are listed below. The information they contain shows how and where the respective tarp can be returned. One day, it will help to ensure that circular truck tarps go through FREITAG) to the recycling process and thus close this cycle.
