Tokyo craft meets Zurich upcycling: Hender Scheme returns to hack two FREITAG icons

Tokyo-based footwear and accessories label, Hender Scheme, famous for fusing contemporary ideas with traditional manufacturing methods, is joining forces with Zurich-based bag makers FREITAG, who are renowned for repurposing used truck tarpaulins. A collaboration built on a shared passion for craftsmanship and long-lasting design, Hender Scheme is hacking two iconic one-of-a-kind FREITAG shopper models by replacing their original tarp handles with their signature offcut leather, giving the bags a distinctive new character. To engage design enthusiasts, exclusive hands-on workshops will be held in Shanghai, Tokyo, and Fukuoka.

The friendship between FREITAG and Hender Scheme is rooted in a mutual appreciation for craftsmanship and long-lasting materials that tell a story. Following the success of their first collaboration in 2023, Hender Scheme returns to reinterpret the iconic FREITAG F52 MIAMI VICE shopping bag. Guided by the Japanese concept of ‘Niji-Sousaku’ (secondary creation), the limited edition is expanding. The reimagined HS MIAMI VICE is now joined by a smaller version, the compact shopper HS SONNY.

This artistic practice holds deep cultural significance in Japan, celebrated for its ability to reinterpret originals—a creative approach that mirrors FREITAG’s own reimagining of iconic designs. This philosophy of reinterpretation is in the DNA of both brands, with the original F52 MIAMI VICE already itself a secondary creation: When the FREITAG founders created this iconic shopper in 1996, they drew inspiration from the look and proportions of a classic, paper carrier bag.

Hender Scheme's design hack follows the same principle for both models: while the one-of-a-kind bodies made from used truck tarps remain untouched, their original tarp handles are replaced with Hender Scheme’s signature offcut leather handles. The leather handles will come in a mix of different natural tan colours which will develop a unique patina over time. In a clever upcycling twist, the original tarp handles are also repurposed into an additional long shoulder strap. The two collaboration bags are the result of both brands’ appreciation of materials that otherwise would have been trashed.

A limited number of pre-made bags will launch first in Asia on October 24, 2025 at the FREITAG Store Shanghai and at Hender Scheme stores in Tokyo Ebisu, Fukuoka, and Osaka. A worldwide release will follow on October 28, 2025 on the Hender Scheme online store.

To celebrate the launch and invite design lovers to take part in the artisanal production process, Hender Scheme is hosting hands-on workshops at FREITAG Store Shanghai, and at Hender Scheme Stores in Tokyo Ebisu, and Fukuoka. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to select their own one-of-a-kind FREITAG shopper and choose their desired Hender Scheme offcut leather handles to be hand stitched onto the bag, creating their very own collaboration piece. From October 17, 2025, workshop tickets will be available on henderscheme.com for Japanese cities and on the FREITAG WeChat for Shanghai.

ABOUT FREITAG
FREITAG makes bags and accessories from used and, increasingly, circular materials. What began in Zurich in 1993 with messenger bags made from discarded truck tarps now comprises around 60 models, every product a one-off. FREITAG products are robust, functional everyday companions that, thanks to a range of repair and exchange services, can expect an even longer, more fulfilling life. FREITAG has its headquarters in Zurich-Oerlikon, is still owned by the two founders, brothers Daniel and Markus Freitag, and employs around 230 people. The company also runs 30 FREITAG Stores worldwide, four of them based in Japan.

ABOUT HENDER SCHEME
Launched in 2010 in Asakusa, Tokyo, Hender Scheme creates leather shoes, bags, accessories and objects. The brand practices “New Craft” – a creative attitude of new craftsmanship where contemporary ideas are realized through the knowledge, experience and techniques of artisans. Hender Scheme’s approach goes beyond boundaries of mode, craft, industry, and art – designing not only the products themselves but also the processes behind them. Each item is shaped by the hands of artisans and finished through the passage of time and use by its owner. The brand now operates five flagship stores in Japan, as well as “circulation,” a platform that prolongs the life of products through repair, resale, and workshops. It extends craft beyond production into repair, reuse, and daily use.
